train stations, tokyo, and tears
(written 12/15)
on the way thru Fussa today, to get to the train station to go into Tokyo, i totally fell off my bike and bit it hardcore. as i’m falling i’m thinking, “i’m going to break my leg and the WHOLE TRIP will be ruined.” i’m seeing visions of tiffany’s crash that kept her from new zealand in my head. i wasn’t going very fast, and i was trying to get up over a (VERY SMALL) curb, which did NOT look like a curb and i took it at a side angle that totally cause me to fall off my bike. i tried to catch myself, and of course, only managed in twisting my knee and falling on my leg. at first i thought i’d dislocated my knee, but then i was able to bend it and straighten it, but it totally hurt.
i didn’t want to get back on the bike, but ryan helped me up and i thought i could walk it off the rest of the way to the train station. but the pain didn’t go away, and so i sent ryan back to the base to get my mom. fortunately we were only about 5 minutes outside the base. she came with the car and toted me back to the house.
because ryan’s still on inactive reserve, and because we’re outside of the states, the hospital was able to see us and treat us as regular active duty military, which means we didn’t have to pay to be seen (ah, just what i’m used to :-). too bad that’s not the case in the states - or i could’ve been getting free medical care all these years! ha!
so anyway, there was no one waiting in the emergency room, and we were seen right away (by a doctor who was probably my age!) - she said i probably just sprained my knee and couldn’t feel anything that was swelling or displaced, so i didn’t even need an x-ray. more than anything i’m just angry at myself for frikkin falling and ruining our day! i know it could’ve been a lot worse and in a couple days i’ll probably be able to walk around enough to get through tokyo - and it’s not like we’re short on time, or like we haven’t been to tokyo before. but i was still totally bummed :-(.
